Carmen Jalandoni Jover, the wife of our grandfather Ludovico Arroyo Banas, came from the Jover Family of La Paz, Jaro and of Iloilo City. She was a daughter of Filemon Jover and Vicenta Jalandoni of La Paz and Jaro districts.
The Jalandoni Jover Family also produced two leaders for the Presidencia of La Paz, Jaro and of Iloilo City. Carmen's brother, Vicente Jover, was President of the La Paz during the American Period, prior to the annexation of this district as part of the reconstituted City of Iloilo in 1937. Another brother, Dominador Jover (a lawyer by profession), became Mayor of Iloilo City.
N.B.
Spanish missionaries stationed in Ogtong established a settlement
along the rivers of Salog (the Spaniards called it as "Xaro", and later "Jaro") . The village (founded on March 3, 1575) was
originally located at Alanga (now La Paz) under the pastoral charge of the
main parish of Ogtong .
After 9 years, in 1584, Jaro was annexed to the
Villa de Arevalo because it was a small community. Priests would only visit Salog occasionally.
On April 25, 1587, the Provincial Chapter of the
Augustinians made Salog an independent parish. It included the La Paz Area, which was formerly called "Lobo", "Llauon", or "Ilaod" (meaning “down the river”).
In the 1800s, the City and Province of Iloilo (including Jaro, which was another progressive chartered city of Spain in the East) saw a fast economic growth, second only to Manila. Iloilo bacame another Spanish province in the southern part of the Archipelago, and was separated from the Province of Manila. On 27 May 1865, Pope Pius IX, made Jaro as the fifth Roman Catholic Diocese of the Philippines and a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Manila.
